Northern Lights Travel FAQ

Locals say if you spend three nights or more in Fairbanks and are actively looking in the evening hours your chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis is higher than 90%.

In 2016 we saw Aurora at least once on every single one of our tours! We believe that careful planning and our diligent Aurora wake-up services were the key to this success.
Contact us for more information.

When you sign up we will send you a comprehensive packing list for clothing and accessories, as well as arrival/departure information and anything else you need for your adventure! You can rent outerwear from the lodge, we won’t let you freeze!

Our Alaska Northern Lights Ecotour does not require a high-degree of physical fitness. While there are many options for those who would enjoy longer hikes, snowshoeing or other more physical activity, they are not required to participate in the trip. Conditions do vary widely over the duration of the season, and extreme cold and very slippery walking conditions are often present. Guests should feel comfortable with the possibility of extreme cold. Depending on weather and availability, activities like dog-sledding can be bumpy. It is recommended that guests be able to support themselves on some slight inclines on some walks and be able to effectively enter and exit a 15 passenger van. All activities are optional. Contact us for more information.
The aurora borealis, the well-known but fickle lights in the sky, have long been a mystery to me. Even after seeing them in the flesh and doing some research, I still only grasped the most basic principles on what causes the lights.

Going to Alaska is quite an adventure, especially if you are out having fun in the snow and searching for the Northern Lights. To give you an idea of what an arctic experience is like, here are a few things you should pack…continue reading
The lights are visible for much of the year in the latitudinal band known as the auroral zone, which corresponds roughly to the Arctic Circle. The closer you are to these Northern latitudes – about 68 to 74 degrees – the better your odds are for catching the light show, but latitudes above 55 degrees offer plenty of good opportunities as well.

Why Travel With Us?

Our night guides stay up watching the skies and provide personal wake up calls when the Aurora appears. You can stay well rested and warm and still catch the best of the Northern Lights!
Our lodge is located 30 mins outside of Fairbanks, surrounded by beautiful forests and trails and far from the lights of town which makes for better Aurora viewing and better photography. Enjoy viewing from your doorstep, and a heated yurt down the hill to stay warm in between light displays.
Our groups are never larger than 12, so you can really get to know your guide and fellow travelers. Ask plenty of questions and never feel like you are getting lost in the crowd. As a small company, we can adapt our plans to the needs of our guests, so it’s not just A trip, it’s YOUR trip.
We only work with guides and partners who truly embody the local spirit of Interior Alaska. Meet with a native author, homesteaders, dog-mushers and others who live and share this unique culture.
Many of our activities have been developed exclusively for our tours. You won’t get experiences like this with anyone else!
Our guides are always local, and always have interesting backstories. One of our guides is a pilot, captain and environmental engineer. Another is a native environmental activist, and another runs marathons and rescues abandoned sled dogs. These are not your average guides!
We have you covered from beginning to end. All your transportation in Alaska is arranged, and our guides escort you to all activities and meals. We do everything together as a group, and by the end of our trip we have always made new friends. Our guides at night will alert you when the lights are active and will be there to assist you with photos and provide hot tea or cocoa as you watch the skies.
It is tricky to capture the magic of the Northern Lights, but our guides have been doing it for years and can assist you in getting your camera primed and ready to nail the perfect shot!

What Our Amazing Guests Have To Say

Barbara McDonald“I had more laughs and fun in 5 short days than I can remember on any other trip. Everything we did was new and even at my age I was not pressured to do more than I felt I could. Never had I dreamed of riding in a dogsled or petting and walking with reindeer! This was a trip I saw advertised and acted on almost immediately. In the days in between considered backing down but am certainly glad I did not. Will certainly not forget the lovely people and great food I had on the trip. Thanks for the great organization Jared.”
—Barbara McDonald

melissa_gibbs“Aurora Borealis has been on my Bucket List for some time and after emailing Jared I choose to go with Gondwana to Fairbanks for the Northern Lights ecotour end of September 2016…..and let me tell you it was excellent in all regards……lodging, food choices, activities (especially enjoyed walking with reindeer!), transportation, and our exceptional guide Patricia….I can’t commend her enough. AND WE SAW THE AURORA on 3 nights!!”
—Suzanne Bedke

melanie_fawer“Absolutely amazing! This wasn’t a tour, it was an unforgettable experience. Our guides, Patricia, Jake and Jen were knowledgeable, patient, and entirely invested in making our week everything we hoped it would be and more. The sights seen, education gained, and most of all the connections and friendships made combined to create the trip of a lifetime for me and my son. Thank you Gondwana!”
—Kristen Roman
